Imagine my surprise when I realized that all the big and little savings tip sand tricks I’ve been implementing since the beginning of the year are actually starting to “pay off”. Here are a few:
• Borrowing books from friends and the library- huge huge savings. Humongous. If local bookstores notice a dip in sales they can definitely blame it on me.
• Cutting back on eating out. Way way back. Again- huge savings. On both money and calories.
• Going to game night in the neighborhood. Bring a dish and byob and it’s a fun, cheap, night out.
• Instead of meeting friends for a movie and/or lunch we meet at someone’s house, bring a DVD and a dish to share and voila, another cheap, fun day.
•Buying groceries at one store, buying generic, and going every ten days instead of once a week.
• Reading magazines that I don’t subscribe to at the library. Saves money and it’s green.
• Using a washable mop instead of disposable ones.
What savings tips work for you? Feel free to share them in the comments.
I like the idea of foodshopping less often. I’ll see if I can pull that off!
Kim, these are great and I share several of them except the book thing! I am trying, desperately, to stay away from the bookstores. thing is, it’s kind of our cheap date, as we get coffee and browse through a stack of things at our table. But I am making progress. The last three times we went, I purchased nothing. Husband said, ” You sure?” and I was good. It’s getting better.
We’re doing the food savings thing, too. Instead of eating out, we eat in the living room, decked with candles and tablecloth on the coffee table and watch a movie.
We’re doing better on “keeping the house”, too, as HM pitches in on floors, etc and I’m the dust and scrub queen. It’s working out great.
We’ve also started car pooling three times a week. My office is on the way to his office. It’s made a big dent in the gasoline bills.
We’re making better use of our “memberships”, too. We belong to the botanial gardens (a small family fee yearly) and so we go there for our outings and its special events, free to members.
Also, dieting means I am now getting into a lot of clothes and so do not have to shop. At least not now. Not for a while, really.
Great to meet you Kim. Hope to see you here or on SheWrites.
Ms. Haas:
This reply has nothing to do with your post, but I had to contact you and don’t know where else to go.
I read your “Flossing” in Issue 2 of Swallow the Moon, the book by Oakland University. What an amazing bit of writing, I am envious. The intro hooked me and the looong sentence at the top of page 83 was a gutsy break with the rules. I’d say more, but they wouldn’t let me take a copy.
What other recommendations of your stuff do you have for me?
Your fan,
Joseph Corlett
